✅ Description:

Obeticholic acid is a Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist. FXR regulates key genes involved in bile acid synthesis, lipid metabolism, and glucose control. By activating FXR, obeticholic acid reduces bile acid production in the liver and enhances bile acid transport, reducing liver exposure to bile acids.

  • warfarin (used to prevent and manage blood clots)
✔️ Contraindications

✔️
  • Hepatic decompensation and failure: In patients with advanced cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class B or C), the use of obeticholic acid at higher doses than recommended (e.g., more frequently than once weekly) may lead to serious liver complications, including fatal outcomes. Monitoring liver enzymes and signs of hepatic decompensation is crucial.
